La Llorona

This is a story a little closer to home growing up in a Hispanic home we were always told this story to make sure that we were on our best behavior. This story has been around for hundreds of years being past on for generations, it’s a sad story but it lives on in those who believe the story is true.

Many years ago in a small village there lived a beautiful girl named Maria. Some say she was the most beautiful girl in the world and because she was so beautiful, Maria thought she was better than everyone else.

As she grew up she became more beautiful and pride in her beauty grew too. When she was a young woman, she wouldn’t give the men from her village a chance. She believed they weren’t good enough for her. She would say “When I marry, I will marry the most handsome man in the world.”

One day a man who seemed to be the one Maria had been talking about rode into her village. He was a breathtaking young ranchero, the son of a wealthy rancher from the southern plains. He was handsome and could play the guitar and sing beautifully. Maria had made up her mind that he was the man for her and she new just the tricks to win his attention.

If the ranchero spoke when they met she would turn away and not speak a word. When he came to her home at night to play his guitar and serenade her, she wouldn’t even come to the window. She refused his all expensive gifts, he fell for her tricks. “I know I can win her heart, I swear I’ll marry that girl.” He said to himself.

Everything had turned out just as she planned. She and the ranchero became engaged and soon they were married. At first everything was fine, they had two kids and they seemed to be a happy family together. However after a few years the ranchero went back to his old life. He would be gone for months and when he returned home it was only to visit his children. He seemed like he did not care for the beautiful Maria, he even talked about leaving Maria and marrying a woman of his own wealth class.

Maria became very angry with him. She also began to feel anger toward her children because he only paid attention to them. One evening Maria was walking with her two children on a pathway near the river. The ranchero came by in a carriage with an elegant lady by his side. He stopped and spoke to his children, but he didn’t even look at Maria.

When he left a terrible rage took over Maria and she took it out on her children. She was blinded by her raged and grabbed her two children and threw them into the river, but as they were pushed down the stream. When she realized what she had done she ran down the bank of the river trying to reach her children, but sadly the were long gone.

The next morning, a traveler came to the villagers that a beautiful woman laid dead by the river. That is where they found Maria and they laid her to rest there. The first night after Maria was buried the villagers heard the found of crying by the river. It was La Llorona crying out saying “Where are my children?” The woman they say walking up and down the river was dressed in a long white robe, the way they had dressed her for burial. On many nights they saw her walk up and down the path crying out for her children. They no longer referred to her by her name from then on she was called La Llorona. Children are warned not to go out at night because La Llorona might snatch them and they will never be returned.
